Let’s Go Caroling
December 4, 2025As the new property tax season approaches, residents who pay their property taxes by mail should be aware of an important change implemented by the U.S. Postal Service that could impact the timing of your payments. Please see the additional information and flyer (on the website).
U.S. Postal Service Policy Change (Effective August 2025):
In August 2025, the Postal Service adopted a nationwide policy that affects when a mail item is postmarked. Instead of receiving a postmark when your envelope is first handled by the Postal Service, the postmark is now applied at regional sorting centers. This means your mailed payment could be postmarked several days after you deposit it in your mailbox.
What does this mean for you?
If you plan to pay your property taxes by mail, do not wait until the last few days before the deadline. A delayed postmark could result in your payment being considered late, potentially incurring substantial late fees or delinquency.
Recommended Actions:
- Mail your property tax payments earlier than usual.
- Consider using the online payment options—such as E-check, debit, or credit card—to ensure your payment is received on time.
- If mailing, you can also physically bring your payment into the post office and request a handstamp postmark in front of a postal worker or send it via certified mail for proof of mailing.
Important for First Installment Payments:
- Send your first installment payment to the Village of Merrillan, using the address found at the bottom of your tax bill.
- Include the payment slip with the barcode for your parcel or write your parcel number on your check.
Regarding Second Installment Payments:
- These are handled by the Jackson County Treasurer and can be paid in several ways:
- At the Courthouse in person: 307 Main St, Black River Falls
- Online through the County Treasurer’s website: https://pp-jackson-co-wi-fb.app.landnav.com/Login

- Using the drop box located inside the Sheriff’s Office interior lobby – please call up to the Jail to be let in if it is after hours.
- Important: Do not send your second installment payment to the Village, as this will delay processing.
Additional Tips:
- Sending your payment through your personal bank’s online bill pay service does not guarantee a postmark; these payments are processed in bulk and may arrive late.
- To ensure timely processing, consider delivering your payment directly to the Courthouse or mailing it with a request for a postmark.
Thank you for your attention to this important update. Your proactive approach helps us ensure all property tax payments are processed smoothly and on time.
