The Village of Merrillan wants everyone to have a safe and Happy 4th of July. With that in mind there needs to be a reminder sent out regarding fireworks. The keyword here is safe. As some of us may already know, just tonight at the Sparta FIreworks event a firework tipped over and discharged into the crowd, causing injuries to an unknown extent. This was at a controlled and permitted event. It can happen anywhere, at any time, and to anyone.
Merrillan has an ordinance, Title 7, Chapter 6, Section 1 (7-6-1), outlining the requirements to set off fireworks within the Village, including what is allowed without a permit. A permit is required for the large fireworks that have been going off within the Village over the holiday, along with insurance for this specific purpose. A good rule of thumb is if it goes up, or blows up, it’s against the law.
Thank you to those who were respectful when requested to stop setting off the fireworks.

The Village was recently recognized for accessibility during elections. Special shoutout to our Deputy Clerk, Chrystal Fitzmaurice, who worked the most recent election. Thank you to her and our Clerk Penny Danielson for all you do in keeping things running smooth!

The village has a new product. Can Koozies for $5. We have 11 on hand, but you can always preorder! Stop in and check them out. All proceeds go to the Park Fund to help with new bathrooms/shower house.

Once again we are faced with vandalism within the Village. Attached you will find pictures of vandalism at Gile Park, which occurred around June 3rd, and at the Lower Lake beach around June 15th.
Most people are aware of this, but some clearly need a reminder. This costs the Village money, resources, and time to fix or clean up. If you are one who did this or participated, you should know there can be serious consequences, whether from these incidents or your future actions of you so choose to behave in such a manner.

Over the past several years the Village has experienced an increase in feral cats. Recently
the Village in coordination with the Jackson County Animal Shelter has taken steps to
mitigate the issue. It is requested that Village residents do not feed the feral cats or
otherwise enable the growth of the problem.
Feral cats, and other animals, can spread disease, viruses, and cause other issues. This
includes feline immunodeficiency virus, feline leukemia virus, feline panleukopenia virus,
rabies, and distemper to other animals. Zoonotic diseases such as rabies, toxoplasma
gondii, cutaneous larval migrans, tularemia, and plague to humans.
As you can see, controlling a feral cat population is important. If you wish to participate in
the program please contact the Village Hall for additional information.
Again, do not feed or otherwise enable feral cats within our community. There are risks, as
outlined, involved in doing so and potential further action will be taken as necessary to
continue our mitigation efforts. If you have any cats within your possession they need to be
properly vaccinated and licensed according to ordinance.
